At TNAU an M.Sc. (Ag.) thesis carries 30 credits

At TNAU the Master’s thesis has real weight in the degree. The PG Rules and Regulations 2025 say thesis research is worth 30 credits in a Master’s programme. These research credits are evaluated semester by semester. Because of this, you should be writing the thesis while the trial is going on.

There is a reading requirement also. For the research credits to be evaluated, a Master’s student has to show 25 article downloads from CeRA, with a certificate of use in form SPGS PF 15. For doctoral students the number is 50. Many students are treating the 25 downloads as formality and download any 25 papers in one week. Better to choose the 25 papers your review chapter will actually cite, and put them in a reference manager from the first day itself. At submission you need a reference management certificate anyway, and a plagiarism certificate along with it.

After your final semester gets over, you give one paper-pack copy of the finished Master’s thesis to the Dean (SPGS). There is a grace period of up to three calendar months, but it is for semester-batch students only (22.1). The similarity must be below 30% (28.6).

The TNAU paper rule Master’s students don’t expect

In most Indian universities a Master’s student completes the degree without publishing any paper. TNAU is different on this point. The 2025 rulebook asks the Master’s student for one original research or review paper, in a journal that NAAS has rated 6.0 or higher. One IP filing is accepted in place of the paper, for example a patent, design or copyright application.

Even the order of authors is fixed in the rulebook. Your name comes first. Your chairman, or the principal investigator of the scheme, handles the correspondence with the journal. The committee members are co-authors. Predatory and pseudo journals are not allowed at all.

For this reason, start planning the paper while the field trial is still running. A NAAS 6.0 journal will not accept your paper within two weeks. Your results chapter has to be cut down and reshaped to the author guidelines of that journal, and we sit with you on that part. The journal choice we leave to you and your chairman.

MBA, M.Com and M.E. projects have very few written rules

We searched the Bharathiar University website for an official manual on MBA or M.Com project work, and we did not find one. Only one exception is there. Bharathiar runs a joint MBA and M.Com programme with ICAI, and that programme has its own project guidelines page, dated 2017. For all other students the project report format comes from the college. In practice it is the department handout and what your guide tells you. Many students also look at last year’s project reports in the library.

M.E. and MBA students in Coimbatore engineering colleges whose degree is from Anna University are in the same position. These colleges are approved research centres for Anna University PhD work. Still, we found no official PG dissertation manual from Anna University. Ask your college’s project coordinator for the current project report template in writing, and keep a copy with you.

PG examiners usually look for a few things in a project report. This is a general pattern only, it is not written in any rule. Each objective should lead to a table or a test. The literature chapter should end by showing the gap. And the findings have to match the objectives one by one. A short report written like this is easier to defend in the viva than a long report filled with percentage tables.

Who checks a Master’s report for similarity?

ShodhShuddhi is not available for Master’s work. As per INFLIBNET’s FAQ, PG students cannot hold accounts, and colleges are also not eligible. So in Coimbatore a Master’s project report is checked with whatever software your college or university has bought. Many times the student sees the report only near the end, with little time left to do the corrections.

The national rule still applies to you. The UGC 2018 regulations gives the same penalty levels for theses and for dissertations. If similarity is 10% or less, there is no penalty. Once it goes past 10%, the scholar has to give a revised script. Plan for that 10% band, unless your university has fixed its own figure like TNAU did with below 30%. Clause 6(g) also says Master’s dissertations should reach Shodhganga, through INFLIBNET, no later than one month after the degree. Once it goes up there, anybody can open and read your report for years together.

How it works from Coimbatore

To start, send us three things. Your programme and college, the due date of your project report or Master’s thesis, and your guide’s instructions. Even a photo of the guide’s whiteboard is fine. TNAU students should also tell us their semester, their credit position and which trial they are running.

First thing we send back is a chapter outline, made in the format your college follows for the project report. Your guide approves this outline first, and only after that the writing starts. You write the draft of the project report. Then we work on it with you in tracked changes, looking at the structure, language, tables, references and how the chapters connect. Statistics are taken up in a separate call, table by table. Our calls go on like this until you are able to tell the meaning of each figure in your own words, with no paper in hand.

Scope and fee are agreed in writing at the beginning. For a TNAU student we also keep some weeks free in the plan for the NAAS 6.0 journal paper, because a journal’s review time does not follow the semester calendar.
